Fun Run Benefits Brighton Charities
Year 8 students were extremely proud to welcome some very important visitors into Longhill just before Christmas for an extra special assembly.
Back at the end of the summer term, when the students were still in Year 7, they had taken part in a fun run around Ovingdean to raise money for three different charities. PE teacher and Head of Nightingale House, Mr Nick Rolf, organised the fun run for all the Houses to support the charities which are close to his heart.
The fun run raised an impressive £2,000, which was divided between the three charities.
The two local charities to benefit from the donation were, firstly, the Sussex Stroke & Circulation Fund. This charity, represented by Heart Consultant Mr Michael Brooks and senior Nurse Sue Ward, has raised over £1,000,000 from voluntary sources since 1980. Second to benefit was KURE, which uses money raised to help fund research into kidney disease and provides diagnostic equipment and treatment at Sussex hospitals. Urology Consultant Mr Andy Symes was delighted to accept the donation for this worthwhile cause.
The third charity to benefit was the Wooden Spoon charity, represented by Mr Alex Pincus and Mrs Ann Holt, which is the children’s charity of rugby. From sensory rooms, specialist playgrounds and sports activity areas to respite, medical and community care, Wooden Spoon funds around 70 projects each year that support disadvantaged and disabled children.
Longhill’s Head of PE, Mr Fallick, attended the assembly along with Mr Dewi Vaughan, President of the Sussex Rugby Football Union. It was a hugely enjoyable, positive event at which everybody concerned thanked the students, their parents and teachers for their support. After the year 8 students presented the cheques, the various charity representatives explained how the money would be spent to support the local community and told the students about the work they are involved in.
Nick Rolf told us, “We look forward to working in partnership with these charities in the future, raising money to give them further support. We will continue to be inspired by working with passion, integrity, teamwork and fun.”
