Athletics Triumph for Junior Girls at Town Sports
This week saw the biggest athletics competitions of the year in the City of Brighton & Hove. With all schools participating at the senior event (Years 9-11) on Monday, followed on the Wednesday by the juniors (Years 7 and 8).
Longhill High School had entries on both days, with high hopes for the junior event. On Monday there were some great performances by Amy Serednicki, who won the 200m in 27.1 secs; Year 9 girls’ relay finished 4th; Reece Manser 3rd in the shot (9.80m); Matt Marshall 4th in the 800m (2.24mins); Eireann Sovegjarto 3rd in the shot (7.04m); Wes Day 3rd in the long jump (4.56m) and the Year 10 boys’ relay finished 3rd. There was a great team effort with people filling the gaps where needed, showing their Longill team spirit.
In the junior event Longhill High made their presence known from the outset, with a 4th and 2nd place in the hurdles for girls and boys. Longhill High had some winners, who were Sophie Wilkinson (150m), Bayley Kibble (150m), Olly Emery (1000m), 7 girls’ relay, 7 boys’ relay and Georgia Waite in the Year 8 shot. The Year 7 team have been attending training, with the practise clearly paying off as the boys team finished 2nd by 5 points to Cardinal Newman and the girls were crowned champions!
The year 7s have shown an enormous amount of promise in athletics, as this year the teams have had the following results:
Indoors – Boys 1st, girls 2nd
Outdoors – Super sixes 2nd, Town Sports – Boys 2nd, Girls 1st.
Let’s hope for more trophies next year!
