Report: This Girl Can – International Women’s Day Primary School Football Tournament

Longhill hosted the This Girl Can International Women’s Day Primary School Football Tournament, an inspiring event aimed at encouraging young girls to engage in sports. The tournament was led by sports leaders from Years 8-11, who took on roles as coaches, referees, and mentors for the participating Year 4 and 5 pupils.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from local primary schools, with teams showcasing teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship. The sports leaders played a crucial role in organising and running the matches, ensuring a fun and supportive environment for all players. Their leadership and encouragement helped boost the confidence of the younger participants, reinforcing the message that football is for everyone.

The tournament not only celebrated International Women’s Day but also highlighted the importance of female participation in sports. It was a fantastic opportunity for the primary school pupils to develop their football skills while being inspired by older students who acted as role models.

A huge thank you to all the sports leaders, staff, and participants who made the event such a success. Events like this continue to break down barriers in sport and empower the next generation of female athletes.

Report: Lunchtime Dodgeball Taster Session

Longhill students had the exciting opportunity to take part in a lunchtime dodgeball taster session led by a local dodgeball club. The session aimed to introduce students to the fast-paced and dynamic sport of dodgeball while promoting physical activity and teamwork in a fun and inclusive environment.

Coaches from the club guided students through a series of warm-ups, skill-building drills, and friendly matches. Participants learned key techniques such as throwing, dodging, and catching, with an emphasis on strategy and fair play. The session was well-received, with high levels of engagement and enthusiasm from students of all skill levels.

The taster session provided a great opportunity for students to experience a new sport and discover the benefits of teamwork, agility, and quick decision-making. Many students expressed interest in joining future dodgeball sessions or getting involved with the local club.

A big thank you to the coaches and organisers for delivering such an enjoyable and energetic session. We look forward to more opportunities to engage with the local dodgeball club and continue promoting sports participation within the school

Match Report: Year 11 Boys vs. Blatchington Mill School

The Year 11 boys’ football team put in a strong performance against Blatchington Mill School, finishing 1-1 in normal time before narrowly losing 4-2 on penalties.

Blatchington Mill took the lead early in the match, but the team stayed composed and continued to create chances. Their persistence paid off in the final 10 minutes, when Callum Ames struck a well-taken equalizer to bring the game level.

With no further goals, the match was decided by penalties. Despite a valiant effort, the boys fell short in the shootout. It was a hard-fought contest, and the team showed great determination and teamwork throughout. Plenty of positives to take forward into future games.

Report: Primary School Rugby Festival

The Primary School Rugby Festival took place in the afternoon from 3.30-5.00 pm, providing an exciting opportunity for young players to develop their rugby skills under the guidance of rugby sports leaders.

Throughout the session, the sports leaders led a variety of drills, focusing on key rugby fundamentals such as passing, movement, and teamwork. The pupils then had the chance to put their skills into practice in small-sided games, showcasing great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

The event was a fantastic success, with the sports leaders playing a key role in creating a fun and supportive environment. Their leadership and encouragement helped build the confidence of the younger players, ensuring an enjoyable and engaging experience for all involved.

Report: This Girl Can Day at Sussex Cricket Ground

The This Girl Can Day at Sussex Cricket Ground was a powerful and inspiring event aimed at empowering women through sport as part of the This Girl Can campaign. The day focused on breaking down barriers to participation and ensuring that girls feel confident and supported in physical activity.

Workshops covered key topics such as menstrual cycles, bra fittings, and ways to improve the girls’ PE curriculum, helping participants understand how these factors impact performance and comfort in sport. Expert-led discussions provided practical advice on managing menstrual health, the importance of proper sports bra support, and how schools can adapt their curriculum to encourage lifelong engagement in physical activity.

The event successfully created an open and supportive space for important conversations, equipping participants with the knowledge and confidence to stay active. A huge thank you to all the organizers, speakers, and attendees for making it such a valuable and empowering experience.
