Family Entertainment with Oliver!

Longhill High School’s Drama Society thrilled audiences recently with three great performances of their summer production, Oliver!  The popular musical tells the story of a poor orphan boy, Oliver, who was played by Year 7 student, Joel Sayers.  Oliver is thrown out of the workhouse for daring to ask for more gruel and is then taken under the wing of the unscrupulous Fagin who teaches young boys to pick pockets for him – it’s an exciting story! Students from years 7 to 11 worked incredibly hard over the past two months with drama teachers Miss Ellis and Mrs Fenwick to create this fast paced, thrilling musical.

The two evening performances were much enjoyed by parents, friends and families who showed their appreciation with tumultuous applause.  School children from five local primary schools were also treated to a matinee performance, which was put on especially for them.  The children, from Woodingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean and Whitehawk, enjoyed a picnic lunch during the interval and were invited to offer feedback on the performance to the show’s Director, Miss Ellis.  The overwhelming feeling was that all the children had enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of entertainment!

As always, departments across the school supported the production by helping with scenery, props, sound, lighting and publicity. “I’m so proud of all the students involved”, said Miss Ellis.  “They’ve worked incredibly hard and it paid off with a fantastic show.  We have a lot of talent in our school and I can’t wait to produce the next one!”
