High Flyers Enjoy Visit to i360
Thirty of Longhill’s high achieving students were lucky enough this week to be given a ‘flight’ on the iconic British Airways i360 on Brighton seafront.
The students, from years 7 to 10, are part of the school’s ‘Ignite’ programme, which offers opportunities to high achieving students.
Organiser Mel King explained, “We are working this year on raising aspirations and achievements for our academically most able – our high ability pupils.
“We want to help them make informed decisions about their future careers and what options are open to them. We want to encourage their aspirations and assist with their choice of pathways, such as whether they go to university and where they go to university.”
“We want to ensure that all students, no matter what their background, are offered academic opportunities for success.
“We’ve all had a fantastic flight on the British Airways i360. It really is iconic – a symbol of high aspirations and we’d like to thank the staff there for giving our students a trip to remember.”
As well as taking a flight in the pod up to 450ft, students visited the onsite exhibition to learn about architecture, science and technology. Year 7 student, Abi, told us “I enjoyed the beach activities, especially the rock-building competition. It was a bit scary going up in the pod, but the views over the city and the sea were great once we were up there. It was a fun day and I’m really glad I had the opportunity to go.”
Whilst on the trip, students were awarded certificates for their achievements throughout the year in various subjects, within the three categories which make up Longhill High’s motto, namely Determination, Aspiration, Success. The students were: Rania Abdelaal, Laith Abbas, Jacob Campbell, Radford Harvey, Tianna Howard, Daisy Lawlor, Jess Magee, Shannon McCann, Spencer Murfitt, Gene Ronaldson, Isobel Ryder, Joel Sayers, Henry Taylor, Madison Wright.
