There’s More to Sport at the University of Brighton
On the 7th of June, Longhill PE Department took 14 GCSE PE students to the University of Brighton, Eastbourne campus. The purpose of the visit was to give students a real insight into life at university and the different courses on offer for those interested in a career in sport.
On arrival we went to one of the lecture halls, where we were given a ‘conference welcome’ from Sarah Hogg, Director of Sport and Fiona Smith, Principle lecturer. We then listened to a key note address from Lewis Hatchett, an ex -professional cricketer, who has defied the odds to have a career in professional sport.
After an interesting morning. we started our practical sessions. Our first session was in the Sport Science labs, where we tested a range of components of fitness. This allowed the students to use equipment that professional and elite athletes use on a daily basis. Our second session before lunch was Sports Coaching. The students had to show teamwork and cooperation to complete the tasks. At the end of this session it was clear that we all needed a break and some well-deserved lunch!
After lunch we had a session based on Sports Management; this was a great session with all students getting involved and coming up with the best ideas to present in a ‘dragons den market’. Finally we finished with a PE Teaching lesson based on differentiation through volleyball.
Today was a fantastic trip for those who went; the students really enjoyed themselves and have seen what university is really like.
The PE Department are committed to raising the profile of sport for all students and we will look to develop our relationships with Brighton University to offer as many opportunities as possible. A huge ‘thank you’ goes to Brighton University staff and students for giving our students such an interesting and informative day.
