Weekly Sports Report – 12 January 2026
This week has been a busy and successful one for sport at Longhill High School, with students across multiple year groups competing with commitment, teamwork, and excellent sportsmanship.
KS4 Badminton Tournament Success
Longhill hosted the Key Stage 4 Badminton Tournament, competing against schools from across Brighton, including King’s, Hove Park, and Dorothy Stringer. Five boys represented the school, playing singles and doubles matches in a five-game format.
- Leo St. Louis (ranked one) won all of his singles matches
- Zheng (ranked two) also went unbeaten in his singles games
- The doubles matches featured Josh Gilbert, Chinmay Ashrit and Ryan Vermeer, who worked extremely well together and won all of their games, showing excellent communication and teamwork
As a result, Longhill won the tournament overall and qualified for the National Final in Medway in March. The team trains two to three times a week with PE staff and Julia, our badminton coach, who has worked with some players for over nine years.
Year 7 Girls’ Football
The Year 7 girls’ football team played a friendly against Brighton Girls’ School, competing against their Year 8 team at the opposition’s request. Despite facing older players and difficult conditions, the girls performed brilliantly and were only narrowly beaten 2–0, with goals conceded late in the game.
The team now looks ahead to two upcoming fixtures against local schools, where strong performances could place them in the top three out of twelve schools in Brighton.
We have also been recognised by England football as a school that provides equal opportunities for girls to take part in football. The picture below is a certificate which will be displayed on the school website. We are very proud of this achievement and have been working hard to develop girls football at Longhill.

Year 9 B Team Football
The Year 9 B team played against Patcham High School’s A team, with several players experiencing their first 11-a-side match. Longhill led 1–0 at half-time through a goal from Albert Rose and defended well for most of the game.

Despite a late surge from Patcham resulting in a 5–2 scoreline, Longhill showed great resilience. A standout late goal from Will, along with strong performances from Charlie, Sam Watkins, and goalkeeper Mo, highlighted the team’s progress and commitment.
Primary School Cricket Festival
On Thursday, Longhill hosted a Primary School Cricket Festival, led by our Year 9 Sports Leaders. Local primary schools took part in activities focusing on catching, batting, fielding, and bowling.

Our students showed excellent leadership, communication, and teamwork throughout the event, which was very well attended and reflected extremely positively on the school within the local community.
