Black History Month – Roedean School

Longhill students Harmony, Zayd and Chinmay were amongst attendees at the annual Roedean Black History Month lecture. The lecture was also attended by students from Roedean, as well as Year 10 students from five local state schools.

Carolyn Bain gave an entertaining and thought provoking talk on starting Afrori Books. She discussed its development from a small online bookshop to the bricks and mortar shop it has become today. She shared with the audience how it has become more than a bookshop to the local community, providing a venue for book fairs, workshops and more.

Carolyn concluded her lecture by reflecting on this year’s theme of Reclaiming Narratives, and the role that books can play in opening minds and changing perceptions about what black authors can write about.
