Inspiring Young Minds: Girls in STEM Event ‘Reach for the Stars’
Last Friday was a day of inspiration and discovery for eleven Year 8 students from Longhill, as they attended the ‘Reach for the Stars’ STEM trip at Hove Park School. The event aimed to empower young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through engaging workshops and activities.
The students participated in a variety of hands-on workshops that showcased the vast possibilities within the STEM fields. They honed their transferable skills, delved into the world of renewable energy, built solar-powered cars, and explored the fascinating realm of microbiology. Each workshop was designed to spark curiosity and encourage the students to envision themselves as future scientists and engineers.

The highlight of the day was a captivating talk by Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, an esteemed astrophysicist from Northern Ireland. Dame Jocelyn is renowned for her groundbreaking discovery of the first radio pulsars in 1967, a feat achieved during her time as a postgraduate student. Although her discovery eventually earned the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974, Dame Jocelyn was not one of the prize’s recipients, a fact that continues to inspire discussions about recognition and equality in science.
Dame Jocelyn’s talk resonated deeply with the students, as she shared her journey, challenges, and triumphs in the field of astrophysics. Her story served as a powerful reminder of the impact that perseverance and passion can have on one’s career and the world at large.
The ‘Reach for the Stars’ event was more than just a day of workshops—it was a celebration of potential, a glimpse into the future of STEM, and a testament to the importance of encouraging young girls to reach for their dreams. As the students returned to Longhill, they carried with them not only new knowledge and skills but also a renewed sense of excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead in the world of STEM.
