Year 9 Visit to the University of Brighton’s Falmer Campus

As part of Longhill High School’s continuing partnership with Uni Connect, a group of enthusiastic Year 9 students recently visited the University of Brighton’s Falmer Campus for a day packed with learning and inspiration. The trip marked the culmination of the ‘Growth Mindset’ project, which the students had worked on with university ambassadors during the previous school year.

The day began with a warm introduction from the University of Brighton outreach team before students were taken on a guided tour of the campus. They explored a range of facilities, from lecture halls and workshops to the vibrant student social areas. A highlight of the visit was stepping inside the medical school, where they gained a fascinating insight into the training of future healthcare professionals including doctors, midwives and paramedics.

Students then took part in a creative LEGO architecture challenge, designing their own university buildings. This activity encouraged teamwork and imagination, while also linking to career paths in design and architecture.

After lunch, the day finished with a reflective session on the ‘Growth Mindset’ project. Students looked back at the goals they had set in Year 8 and considered how far they had come. Many left feeling inspired about their futures, with many saying they could picture themselves studying at Brighton University one day.

This visit was organised through our collaboration with Uni Connect, a national programme designed to help young people explore the wide range of opportunities in higher education. Longhill High School is committed to working with local universities to broaden horizons and empower students to make confident, informed choices about their next steps.

We would like to thank the University of Brighton for welcoming our students so warmly, and the Uni Connect team for making the experience possible.
