Year 8 Visit to the University of Brighton’s City Campus
As part of Longhill High School’s ongoing partnership with Uni Connect, a group of enthusiastic Year 8 students recently enjoyed an inspiring and engaging trip to the University of Brighton’s City Campus. This opportunity was designed to introduce students to university life and give them a taste of what higher education has to offer.
The day began with a warm welcome from the University of Brighton’s outreach team, followed by an informative and interactive campus tour. Students were shown around key areas of the City Campus, including lecture theatres, creative studios, and student social spaces. It was an exciting chance for them to get a feel for the vibrant atmosphere of university life and ask questions about what studying at university involves. For many, it was their first time visiting a university, and the experience helped to demystify the world of higher education.

Following the tour, students took part in a university-themed quiz that tested their knowledge and encouraged them to think about their future aspirations. The quiz sparked some lively competition and discussion, with students impressing staff with their curiosity and thoughtful answers.
The highlight of the day was a creative workshop where students made their own zines – small handmade magazines that allowed them to express themselves and reflect on what they had learned during the trip. With the support of university staff and their teachers, the students produced some fantastic and imaginative work. The zines included drawings, personal goals, and ideas about future careers, showcasing the creativity and ambition of our Year 8 students.

Students said that the trip was “Really fun and made how I see learning different” and that they have “learned more about life and uni and feel more reassured about going to uni in the future”.
The trip formed part of our collaboration with Uni Connect, a national programme that aims to support young people in exploring their options for higher education. Longhill High School is proud to work closely with local universities to ensure our students are informed, inspired, and confident in their educational journey.
A big thank you goes to the University of Brighton for hosting such a well-organised and welcoming day, and to the Uni Connect team for making it possible. Our Year 8 students returned to school buzzing with ideas and excitement about their futures – a sign that the visit had truly made an impact.
